2022 - 48 YEARS OF THE THREE PEAKS

It seems a lifetime since Denis Knowles and Denis Turner of the Leeds Telephone Area Social Club conceived the idea of an inter-Area walking competition, to be based on the popular challenge walk covering the Yorkshire Three Peaks (it was 1974). After all these years, with only one year off for Foot and Mouth and 2 years for Covid,  the current committee wants to retire gracefully after 2022 because of increasing age and senility. When you read this Mick Abbott will be drawing his 8th yr of State Pension !

Once Graeme and Chris left BT in 2020 , these two keystones of BT ruptured the BT equilibrium forever.

Nezra the staff sports and social club continue as sole sponsor of the Event which says it all really. The Staff made British Telecom a top telco and then BT unmade it all.

THE LAST EVENT

The event takes in Yorkshire's 3 proudest mountains, Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, covering a distance of 24 miles (40 km) with 5000 feet of ascent.   The walk is done in teams of 4 and a specified amount of equipment has to be worn/carried for safety reasons (see rule sheet).   We staff 9 checkpoints and at 2 of these supply hot and cold drinks (if you are carrying a mug).   The checkpoints have radios (Raynet) to summon assistance if required and to ensure that nobody has strayed on the fells.   A minibus makes regular trips up and down the valley taking walkers back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale should they have reached their goal or limit.
